Yellow Birch in Tree Crotch

Yellow Birch seeds are so small that they have trouble reaching the soil through the leaf layer. So, they developed the ability to sprout on elevated surfaces such as rocks and mossy logs. Here, one sprouted in the organic matter in the crotch of a taller tree. It’s not uncommon to see young birches growing high up on another tree.
